KATA RULEBOOK

1. Rules for Adult and Junior Kata Competition

The kata competition is held in two rounds. In the first round, the mandatory kata must be performed, while in the second round, the optional kata.

The presentation order must be determined by drawing lots before each round.

All participants in the category must perform both the mandatory and the optional kata. Otherwise, they will be disqualified from the competition.

The final result of the kata competition is determined by the total valid scores collected by the competitors in the two rounds.

The competition can be conducted manually or by computer, including the drawing of lots.

1.1 Presentation of Mandatory Kata (SHITEI)

- The chief judge lines up all participants in the category on the tatami.

- If there are multiple mandatory katas in the category, then a kata card is randomly drawn.

- The name of the drawn kata is announced. Participants in the category must perform this kata.

- After this, the chief judge dismisses the competitors from the tatami.

- The informing judge calls the competitors to the edge of the competition area in the previously determined order. The competitor bows there.

- Upon the chief judge's command / Nakae /, the competitor steps onto the starting line and bows towards the chief judge.

- At the command of the chief judge, the competitor begins the kata presentation. / E.g., Mokuso - Tsuki - No Kata Yoi, mogore hajime /

- After completing the kata, at the command "Naore, Yasume" from the chief judge, the competitor returns to the starting line and awaits the decision of the judges.

- After the completion of the kata, the chief judge allows approximately 10 seconds for the judges to make their decision and set the scoring boards.

- Then, with the command "Hantei - O - Onegai Shimasu" or "Hantei - O - Torimasu" and a long soft whistle followed by a short one, the judges request the raising of the scoring boards.

- The judges simultaneously and without delay raise the scoring boards with their right hand.

- The announcer clearly reads the scores shown by the chief judge and the judges to the recorder.

- The recording judge records the scores, then announces the total of the valid scores.

- At the short strong whistle from the chief judge, the scoring judges lower their boards.

- The competitor bows to the chief judge, then steps back to the edge of the competition area, bows again, and leaves the competition area.

- Upon the command "Sagate" from the chief judge, the competitor bows to the chief judge, then steps back to the edge of the competition area, bows again, and leaves the competition area.

1.2 Presentation of optional Kata (TOKUI)

- The start and scoring are the same as the format used when presenting the mandatory kata.

- After the bow, the competitor loudly announces the name of the kata to be presented.

- At the command of the chief judge, the competitor begins the kata presentation.

2. Calculation of Valid Scores:

The recording judge records the scores of the chief judge and the scoring judges.

- The lowest and highest scores are dropped, and the sum of the remaining points constitutes the valid score for the respective round.

3. Determination of Final Result and Placements

The valid scores obtained by the competitors in each round must be added together. The resulting total score determines the ranking.

In case of a tie (equal points) among the top three placements, the higher valid score obtained in the first round must be considered. If this score is also equal, then the competitors with the same score must perform the mandatory kata drawn by the chief judge. The order between the two competitors will be decided by the judges using a flag system.
